Forced air outdoor wood stove. November 04, , I built it with hopper bottom and a sliding trap door so I could dump ashes without shutting it down. I connected the fan limit control to a separate thermostat beside my gas furnace thermostat in the house. We would set the wood furnace thermostat at the temperature we wanted and the gas furnace thermostat several degrees lower. The wood furnace had a squirrel cage blower on the back of it to circulate air. Insulated ducts connected it to my gas furnace. I dumped hot air in to the cold air return just above the furnace. Pulled cold air out from higher on the cold air return. I put a light aluminum sheet swinging door inside the cold air return so the hot air from the wood furnace would swing it open but it would block any hot air trying to short circuit back to the wood furnace.

It definitely makes a difference and I recommend it. It won’t equalize the heat, the living room is still much warmer than the bedrooms, but it warms the bedrooms a lot more than they would be without the blower running and it helps keep the living room from over-heating which is an issue in this well-insulated home. However, if your duct work is outside the heated envelope then you definitely don’t want to do this and if you need a humidifier your house is too drafty and you need a blower door and duct blaster test.
Domestic Hot Water Sample Installation You can heat your domestic water two simple ways. Domestic Coil The domestic coil provides a method of heating water indirectly through water-to-water convection.
Things that you should examine before purchasing an outdoor furnace: In these furnaces a long chimney is needed to draw air over the fire in order to keep it burning. If the furnace has a forced air draft, then extra chimney length is a liability as it causes creosote. The answer is simple. Unburned gases when exiting into the chimney cool off, condense and form creosote. Outside chimneys run much cooler and may result in massive creosote buildup.
In the off season they are needed to keep out rain which could rust out the firebox. In season they are a good idea to prevent wayward sparks from exiting. There are some caps such as the clover leaf design that do all of the above but also prevent downdraft.
How to Wire a Thermostat | HVAC Control
Plenums are oriented front to back, like a normal oil furnace, reducing installation costs. With proper installation, the FS may be operated as a gravity-flow unit in the event of a power failure. Compact design saves valuable floor space. Wood chamber located on top for easy loading. Three top-mounted cleanouts for easy cleaning.
Nov 21, · It’s not really a furnace, rather, if you add an air handler The kitchen had a wood stove with a water jacket and a small tank in the closet. The original home owners had to chop wood before doing the dishes or having a bath. At least it had indoor plumbing. #15 hyo silver, Nov 18, Theoretically, I can hook it up myself, but I can’t.

These thermostats, whichever type of thermostat or thermostats you have, require little maintenance. Often, I find that the only thing people know about their AC and Heating systems is how to turn the thermostat on and off. And change the temperature setting. The purpose of this site is to help people go beyond the thermostat.
Jan 04, · Now, if you leave your furnace blower running continuously, then the warmed up air from the wood stove will be mixed with the rest of the house – just leave the door that the wood stove is in open. Just because it doesn’t feel real warm, that energy is still being encapsulated by your house.
Back when there was just 1 or 2 units in the US that were an add on to an existing electric water heater. But you already have a heat pump. You already stated that it’s a back up to the pellet stove, but what about the summer? You regularly use it for AC? If so, look into a super deheater. It hooks up to the heat pump to use the hot side to provide hot water. It might not be workable if the heat pump is off most of the time without a back up water heater though. I haven’t looked into the newer heat pump water heaters yet, but the ability to attach duct work was plus when I researched them before.
This allows you to direct the waste cold air from the water heater into a central AC system during the summer. Of course they are more common in other countries.

September 21, , Wow, time goes by fast. I’ve an indoor boiler with a 9 gallon water jacket and have it plumbed to pump the hot water through three baseboard heating zones with each pump controlled by its own zone thermostat. For the first 10 years, this wood boiler took the place of an oil boiler, unless I was gone and couldn’t keep the wood fire going. The last 25 years the oil boiler was replaced with a gas boiler for backup.
With a Benjamin Combination, you can enjoy the convenience of oil when oil prices are down, and switch to costsaving wood when they’re up—all with one unit that takes up the same floor space as an oil furnace or boiler.
I’d like to add a second thermostat near the one for my gas furnace. I’d like to wire it in such a way that it turns on the blower motor in the main furnace when the house gets cool, but I want to set the main thermostat lower than the wood burner thermostat in case the wood fire gets low and the gas burner will kick in. I just don’t know how thermostats are wired. EPMiller Nov 24, , If I understand your post correctly you are asking for something that is a bit beyond simple thermostat wiring.
If you don’t know how to wire a basic thermostat to your wood stove, I think it may be a bit beyond you to do a thermostat, relay and probably transformer just with help from here. A decent HVAC tech won’t have any trouble, but I’ve even seen them do some convoluted solutions to non-standard setups like this. Actually, as I was typing that last sentence I realized that it could be done really neatly with one 2-stage thermostat and if required relay isolation for the wood stove.
Still won’t be exactly simple. I don’t have the time to do a wiring diagram drawing for you, and I would need some information that is missing in your post to really be certain I would be hooking things up correctly.
